MORTLACH

SPEYSIDE

A bold, meaty whisky, but one with complexity and finesse. After dinner drinking.

Mortlach was the first of Dufftown's seven distilleries when it was established in 1823. The distillery has always been held in high regard and is locally thought on as one of the very best Speyside whiskies. Mortlach remained the only distillery in Dufftown until 1887 when William Grant opened Glenfiddich distillery, having learnt his trade at Mortlach from 1866.

The distillery was bought by John Walker & Sons in 1923 and has hence become apart of Diageo. Mortlach was largely rebuilt in 1964 mainly within the original building exterior and two pagoda roofs were added. Mortlach has one of the strangest distilling processes, with three wash stills and three spirit stills, all of different sizes and not paired up in any way. However a complex process results in a top quality spirit.
